Pugshire Terrier

The Pugshire is a small mixed breed dog bred from the Pug and the Yorkshire Terrier. Since both of these are toy breeds, the Pugshire do not usually get bigger than 12 pounds and should not be more than 15 inches tall. They have a medium length coat that can be almost any color such as brown, red, black, blue, silver, merle, white, brindle, pied, or any combination of colors. They are sweet and loving pets that make good lap dogs and wonderful companion pets for anyone. They enjoy other pets and children but should be supervised with little ones so nobody gets hurt.

Pugshire Breed History

The Pugshire is a designer dog or hybrid that has been around for about 15 years but has not had time to create much of a history. Therefore, it is best to look at the backgrounds of the parent breeds, the Pug and the Yorkshire Terrier. The Pug is one of the oldest known breeds and has been around since 206 B.C. in China where they are believed to have been bred from the French Mastiff, Bulldog, and the Pekingese. The breed was only owned by royalty at the time and they even had soldiers to guard them from being stolen. The breed had many different names over the years such as the Mop in Germany, Carlin in France, Caganlino in Italy, Doguillo in Spain, and the Mopshond in Europe. Eventually, they became popular with more than just royalty and were brought to England in the 1800s. They had two dominant breeding lines at the time, which were the Morrison line and another from Russia. The little dog became a well-known face on paintings, figurines, and postcards during the Victorian Era and were even more popular. After the Civil War, the Pug made its way to America where it was accepted and registered with the American Kennel Club in 1885. The Yorkshire Terrier was bred in England from a mixture of different Terriers and the Maltese in the 1800s to be a ratter. These little beauties became very popular with the ladies because of their beautiful coat and sweet temperament and were eventually kept as companion pets as well. They got their name from their birthplace and from being mixed with so many different types of Terrier. For example, they are part Paisley or Clydesdale Terrier, part Black and Tan Toy Terrier, part Skye Terrier, and possibly part Waterside Terrier. The first Yorkshire Terrier club was started in 1872 in England and then the British version was started in 1874. Several years later, in 1885, they were recognized by the American Kennel Club, where they are the 9th most popular breed of dog.

Pugshire Breed Appearance

Your little Pugshire is a toy sized hybrid that is about 12 to 15 inches at the shoulders and weighs 7 to 12 pounds. Their fur is longer than the Pug but it is shorter than the Yorkshire Terrier and it can be almost any color. They have small furry ears that flop forward and a tail that curls up over the back. The Pugshire has a small head, large, dark brown eyes, a black or brown nose, and may have a brachycephalic muzzle like the Pug. They will most often have a dark mask with a lighter body but not always.

Pugshire Breed Maintenance

The Pugshire will need to be brushed at least once every three or four days with a pin brush or stiff bristle brush. Once a week, you should also take a metal comb and give your dog a thorough grooming, making sure to get underneath the neck, behind the ears, and under the legs. You can bathe them with a mild dog shampoo when needed but not too often as it will dry out their skin, causing irritation. At least once a month you should trim her toenails and clean out her ears as well. Also, clean their teeth once a week to prevent tooth decay.

Pugs and Yorkshire Terriers often suffer from brachycephalic syndrome, bronchitis, and cataracts. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Pugshire Temperament

The Pugshire is a good-natured dog breed that loves people and pets alike and will get along with just about anyone as long as they are properly socialized when young. However, your dog needs to be watched with small children because she may snap at them when scared. Training them can be time-consuming and you must be patient because they can be stubborn with some things like housebreaking. Make sure you use positive reinforcement and not physical punishment because they can become aggressive or skittish. The Pugshire is also prone to separation anxiety but they can adapt to being alone now and then if they get enough physical and mental stimulation from you when you are with them.

Pugshire Activity Requirements

The Pugshire loves to run, jump, and play and should be taken outdoors for exercise at least an hour per day every day. If your dog does not get enough activity every day, she can get bored or anxious and some dogs will develop bad habits like aggressiveness and barking excessively. This breed enjoys playing catch, agility training, swimming, going for long walks, and spending time with other dogs at the dog park. Since the Pugshire is small, it is possible to give her enough exercise indoors when the weather is bad but it is best for them to get outside at least once or twice a day.

He is new to me. His former owners were moving out of state and were only taking their elderly Chihuahua. He is adorable. I have had Pugs for over 13 years and both have passed on.

Alexi is a happy dog who likes to run, jump and play with her brothers (my kids). We got her yesterday (July 25) and the first thing she did when she saw me was to cuddle and lick my face. Right there and there she didn’t show any shyness or awkward behavior. We just clicked! And my family love her ❤️
