American Staffordshire Terrier

To get a Westie Staff, you have to combine an American Staffordshire Terrier with a West Highland White Terrier. Although these two seem like they would not be a good match since one is small and the other is large, they make an excellent family pet that can hunt, guard, and is as lovable and cuddly as a teddy bear. They are both smart breeds that learn quickly but need to be trained properly since American Staffordshire Terriers can be aggressive when not trained well. The Westie Staff is an active and independent dog that can take care of itself for the most part while also watching your back.

Westie Staff Breed History

The Westie Staff is a hybrid so you need to take a look at the American Staffordshire Terrier and the West Highland White Terrier to get an idea of their history. The American Staffordshire Terrier was originally bred to be a bull baiter and for dog fighting in the 1800s. They are thought to be related to a Bulldog and some sort of Terrier like an English or Fox Terrier. They were originally thought of as Pit Bulls or Yankee Terriers until 1972 when the name was changed to American Staffordshire Terrier to keep them from being mistaken for their English cousin. When dog fighting and bull baiting became illegal, these dogs were used mainly for protection and as companion pets. Accepted by the American Kennel Club in 1936, they quickly became popular pets, ranking 81 out of 190 breeds in the United States. The West Highland White Terrier has an interesting history. Bred in Scotland from other Terriers in the 17th century, they were developed to be hunting companions for fox hunters. The breed started out as a regular colored Terrier but they were bred to be white due to a hunting accident in which a hunter’s dog was shot when mistaken for a fox. The West Highland White Terrier was also found to be a lovable pet and became popular as a lap dog. The English Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1906 and the American Kennel Club followed suit two years later. The breed is the 41st most well-liked breed in the United States now.

Westie Staff Breed Appearance

With the muscular build of the American Staffordshire Terrier and the athletic stature of the West Highland White Terrier, the Westie Staff is an impressive little dog. Although they do not get much larger than 40 pounds and are less than 20 inches tall, they are smart looking dogs with an adorable fuzzy coat. They are most often white mixed with other colors such as chocolate, orange, beige, liver, blue-gray, black, lemon, brindle, merle, speckled. Their straight fur is typically thick and of medium length with a fuzziness that makes them look like a stuffed animal. The Westie Staff has a black nose on a squared muzzle with large brown eyes that have an alert and intelligent expression.

Westie Staff Breed Maintenance

The coat of the Westie Staff needs to be brushed thoroughly every other day at least. Most people use a stiff bristle brush or pin brush but you can also use a rubber curry mitt or slicker brush. Although they do not shed as much as most dogs, they do need to be brushed regularly to reduce seasonal shedding. You can bathe your dog as needed and clean her ears and teeth once a week to decrease the chance of infection or tooth decay. When necessary, you can trim your dog’s toenails with a nail trimmer or take her to a groomer to have it done.

Westie Staff Temperament

Both the American Staffordshire Terrier and the West Highland White Terrier are bold and courageous dogs that can be headstrong and belligerent as well as lovable and sweet. Even though they are not typically the ones to go out and start a fight, they will stand up for themselves and their family. If socialized well when young, they will get along good with other dogs and older children but they are not good with children younger than preschool age. Males are known to be easier to get along with than females but they all need consistent training and rules. Training them is not difficult but may take some time and patience.

Westie Staff Activity Requirements

It is essential that you allow your dog plenty of exercise to keep her from getting overweight and to prevent anxiety and boredom. Because both Terriers are working and hunting breeds, they require at least an hour of vigorous activity per day. If you are not in to hunting, your Westie Staff would love to just be allowed outside in a fenced area to chase the local wildlife. They also like digging in the dirt and chewing on things so make sure you have an area for them to enjoy these activities. It is also recommended that you supervise them while outside so that they do not make an unplanned escape under the fence. Other activities that the Westie Staff will like include swimming, hiking, playing fetch, going for walks, and agility training.
