Introduction

San Francisco is arguably one of the West Coast’s most famous cities. Take sites like the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, add in delicious food like Ghirardelli chocolate and sourdough bread, and you have a gem of a city. People aren’t the only ones that love this place. Dogs thrive in San Francisco. In fact, it’s been said there are more dogs than kids in this city. While canine life in The City has its challenges, there are definitely ways to make living with your urban fur baby pleasant and pawsome. Here are some tips for owning a dog in San Francisco.

Live in a Dog Furiendly Neighborhood

Make life for you and your pup a bit easier by living in a dog furiendly area of the city. If pawssible, find a home in Bernal Heights, Inner Sunset, Noe Valley, or Parkside. NoPa and Mission Bay are also great choices. With their parks, vets, pet shops, and groomers, these neighborhoods make being a pet parent a snap. Plus, you’re more likely to live by other dog owners, which means your pup will have the chance to meet new furry friends.

Determine the Best Mode of Travel

If not traveling by foot, folks living in San Francisco rely on Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) or the San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI). Pets can only ride on MUNI during non peak hours and must be muzzled and leashed, or in a carrier. Similarly, BART requires pups to be in a carrier. If these regulations don’t work for your pup, try a ride share service or taxi. Most are pet friendly, just be sure to ask the driver.

Make Sure Your Pup is Leash Trained

In a densely pupulated city like San Francisco, it’s impawtant that your pup is on their best behavior when out in public. An urban dweller like your pup needs to be leash trained so they can heel, sit, and stay at a moment’s notice. When out and about, skip the retractable lead, and use a leash that’s between four to six feet long. Having a well trained pup makes it extra fun to cruise through Chinatown or meander around Fisherman’s Wharf.

Take Advantage of the Canine Furiendly Activities

Looking for a dog furiendly activity? You’ve come to the right place. San Francisco has plenty for your and your pup to do. Join the Blue and Gold Fleet for a one hour Bay Cruise so your pup can see Alcatraz and the iconic bridges of the Bay Area. Celebrate all things dog at the annual DogFest Pet Festival, Carnival & Parade. Or stroll around the beautiful Union Square Shops for a casual afternoon out. Sounds furrific!
