The Wire Scottish Fox Terrier is a happy, people-pleasing hunter with a nose for mischief. Both of his parents, the Scottish Terrier and Wire Fox Terrier, were beloved for their keen hunting senses, so this little guy will ensure your property stays rodent-free. A wiry beard and big, black eyes might make him look old, but don’t let appearances fool you! This fellow is a bundle of sprightly energy and will constantly desire your praise and attention. Harsh reprimands can make him sad, so focus your training on praising good behaviors. If you do, you’ll have a friend for life!

Wire Scottish Fox Terrier Breed History

Not a lot is known about the origin of the Scottish Fox Terrier outside of its parentage: the Scottish Terrier and the Wire Fox Terrier. Both of these breeds originated during the 19th century from different places throughout the United Kingdom. One of the oldest breeds in Scotland, the Scottish Terrier is considered to be a key founder of all modern-day Terrier breeds and was a favorite of royals and diplomats alike. This popularity has continued into the modern era with loads of quaintly-crafted paraphernalia such as mugs, pieces of artwork and postcards; making the Scottish Terrier one of the most recognizable breeds in existence. The Wire Fox Terrier, whose origins can be traced back to Wales, also has a history in royal households. King Edward VII of England adored his Wire Fox Terrier, Caesar, whom he bestowed with a special collar that read, “I am Caesar. I belong to the King.” These days, Wire Fox Terriers are not as commonly seen in family households but continue to be popular amongst the show dog circuits. Hybrids of two common dog breeds like the Scottish Fox Terrier are becoming more and more popular with dog owners as they contain the best qualities of both of their parents. The Scottish Fox Terrier is no exception. His sharp senses make him an excellent hunter, particularly when it comes to smaller rodents like mice, rats and squirrels. Like both the Scottish and Wire Fox Terriers, the Scottish Fox Terrier loves the affection of children – though he should be strictly monitored with children under the age of six due to his tendency to be over-eager – and will make the perfect companion and guard dog for any family!

Wire Scottish Fox Terrier Breed Appearance

The Scottish Fox Terrier has a face that emotes his wildly curious nature with ears that stand tall on his head. It is also possible for this breed to have ears that are folded, though this is less common and may depend on the breeder. His short legs, a trait from his Scottish Terrier heritage, are traditionally covered in longer, wiry fur, which can range in color from black, silver, and red to a steely blue, brindle, white, or wheat. The Scottish Fox Terrier’s tail is short and stands pin-straight when he is at attention or on the hunt for a little critter to fetch. His snout is long and boxy, making his head appear smaller – though perhaps this is the secret to the little guy’s hunting genius!

Wire Scottish Fox Terrier Breed Maintenance

The Scottish Fox Terrier is a breed that is easy to physically maintain. Solidly rooted in the Terrier family, his wiry fur is widely considered to be hypoallergenic with very little shedding. He requires weekly brushing to ensure his fur does not become matted or coarse. Some Terriers are prone to having dry, itchy skin, so give your dog bathing and grooming sessions only as needed. It is important to brush your dog’s teeth every day, if possible, in order to prevent a variety of gum and tooth diseases which can be detrimental to the dog’s ability to eat, drink and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Wire Scottish Fox Terrier Temperament

This little guy can be a handful, so if you do not want a dog that will keep you entertained with his crazy antics and nose for trouble, then the Scottish Fox Terrier might not be for you. His incredible intelligence and eagerness to please is second only to his love of hunting, fetching, and digging. He will spend hours of his time enjoying your company and praise while demanding you keep him active with a variety of games and activities. The Scottish Fox Terrier interacts well with children, but the eagerness and fragility of both the children and the dog make for an ill-suited environment, so it is best to keep him away from kids under the age of six. Still, his eagerness to please makes the Scottish Fox Terrier easy to train. He can easily become nervous if overly reprimanded, so it is important that all training be done with positive reinforcement as the main focus.

Wire Scottish Fox Terrier Activity Requirements

Don’t let the Scottish Fox Terrier’s small stature fool you! This little guy is a bundle of feisty energy who needs a lot of stimulation to keep his mind active. With a temperament perfect for agility training, these dogs love to please, so games like fetch are  an excellent way to keep this fellow occupied. Just keep in mind that his smaller legs can only carry him so far, so it is likely he will get tired faster than other dogs his size! However, it is this smaller size that makes him such a universal dog. Apartments, condos or houses – all can make a great home for the Scottish Fox Terrier as long as there is plenty for him to do. Fenced-in yards are highly recommended for this breed due to his inclination to hunt and dig. Adaptable to just about any weather, the Scottish Fox Terrier shall be your companion no matter where you live!
