Scoland Terrier

The Scoland Terrier is a hybrid mix of the Scottish Terrier and the Westie (West Highland White Terrier). There isn't much historical information available for this hybrid so we'll have to learn more about it from the histories of the parent breeds.  This is truly a vision from the United Kingdom, with both breeds originating in Scotland.  The Scottish Terrier (or at least canines resembling the Scottish Terrier) are said be traced back to about the 1500's when they were described in a book by a man named Don Leslie, or even further back to Pliny the Elder in 55 B.C. when, during the Roman occupation of Britain, he wrote about the "small dog who followed its quarry to the ground".  Though their heritage is somewhat obscure, it is believed to have included the Aberdeen Terrier, a member of a group of terriers known as Skye Terriers which was later split into a number of terriers, one of which is the Scottish Terrier we know and love today.  Originally, the Scottish Terrier was bred to be a fox hunter and ratter as well as eradicator of other vermin.  The talented, spirited and confident Scottish Terrier was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885 and is the 58th most popular dog in its registry.  The Westie's origins can be traced back to the 1500's when it was developed and bred to hunt small game in the Scottish Highlands, one finding it in mining communities, on farms, in villages, mills, fields, homes and gardens hunting, trapping and killing vermin. The breed color originally was red but, after one of them was mistakenly killed because it looked so much like a fox, they bred to change the color first to cream and ultimately to the white color we see today.  The Westie was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1908 and is the 41st most popular dog breed in its registry.  The Scoland Terrier hybrid itself is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Breed Registry, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the Dog Registry of America and the International Designer Canine Registry.
