Rottweiler Husky

The Rottsky is an intentional hybrid, the combination of a large and muscular guard dog from Germany, the Rottweiler, and the Siberian Husky, an ancient canine that has been an integral part of life for the Chukchi people of Russia since before written history in the area. This is an extremely athletic animal with a great deal of endurance and while they make excellent exercise partners and are typically loyal, dependable, and protective canines, they are far too active for apartment-like settings and can become highly destructive if not given the proper amount of exercise and mental stimulation.

Rottsky Breed History

The Rottsky is a designer dog, the deliberate cross between the Rottweiler, a large German dog known for its guarding ability, and the Siberian Husky, an ancient sled dog developed by Russian nomads at some point in prehistory. Rottweillers have been in use as cattle driving dogs in Germany since the middle ages, and although their complete origins are obscured by history, most believe that they are the descendants of the large Drover dogs that were employed by Roman cattlemen and butchers as early as 700 A.D. to protect cattle and drive them to market, mixed with some local German breeds such as the Appenzeller Sennenhund and the Bernese, Entlebucher, and Greater Swiss Mountain Dog breeds. The development of the locomotive in the mid-1800s meant that fewer cattle driving dogs were needed and the popularity of these determined and dignified dogs dropped dramatically. It wasn’t until they were rebranded in the 1900s as high-quality canines suitable for police, military, and security work that they regained their popularity and today are also typically regarded as dependable and protective family companions. The Siberian Husky is an even older breed, developed by the Chukchi people, an indigenous native tribe from Russia. The Siberian Huskies were highly valued by the Chukchi people as they were used to pull sleds carrying food, possessions, and sometimes even people, which allowed the tribe to travel farther and faster. When these dogs were not being used for work, they spent their time with the women and children of the tribe, and only non-aggressive and well-tempered animals were tolerated. The combination of these two breeds often result in a strong, loyal, and enduring animal that is typically leaner and less prone to heart conditions than the Rottweiler with more enhanced guarding instincts than the Siberian Husky. Some breeders may mix Rottweiler with the Alaskan Husky instead of the Siberian Husky and call it a Rottsky, but the Alaskan Husky may contribute a different temperament and different structural features than the Siberian Husky, so it is always important to do your research when choosing a breeder.

Rottsky Breed Appearance

The Rottsky is typically somewhere around two feet tall at the shoulder with a slightly longer body. They are generally powerfully built animals with compact but substantial musculature, although individual dogs may lean more towards either the bulkier structure of the Rottweiler with a broad head and short, wide muzzle or toward the slightly longer and leaner form of the Husky with a more moderately sized head and a medium length, tapered muzzle. They have almond-shaped eyes that are most often a dark brown, although they can inherit blue or heterochromic eyes from the Husky, and although both parent breeds have ears that are triangular in shape, the Rottweiler's ears fold down close to the sides and the Husky’s ears stand erect. Although both the Rottweiler and the Siberian Husky have double-coats, these coats can be quite different from one another, as the coat of the Rottweiler is short, glossy and lays flat against the body and the coat of the Husky is medium in length, well-furred, and stands out from the body.

Rottsky Breed Maintenance

Neither parent breed requires much in the way of bathing and bathing the Rottsky too frequently can strip skin of natural oils that are needed to maintain the coat. If your Rottsky has a coat that is somewhat longer and denser like that of the Siberian Husky, it is particularly important to ensure that their undercoat gets completely dry as this breed is known to frequently develop growths of mold and mildew in the undercoat if it is left moist. Both the Rottweiler and the Siberian Husky are heavy shedders and although this can often be controlled with several brushing sessions per week, daily brushing may be required during the spring and fall, when shedding is more intense.

Insuring your Rottsky puppy as soon as “pawssible” is essential for preventing high vet care costs. Start comparing insurance plans from leading insurers like Healthy Paws and Embrace and save over $270 a year.

Rottsky Temperament

This canine is quite active, both mentally and physically, and they require a good deal of exercise, attention, and mental stimulation to prevent problem behaviors. Without these resources the Rottsky may become incredibly destructive; while a bored or restless Siberian Husky is likely to vocalize loudly, physically act out, and engage in destructive digging, the bored or anxious Rottweiler is known to chew on items as varied as their chew toys, your shoes, or even the walls themselves. When given the proper amount of exercise, socialization, and mental stimulation they are generally amicable but reserved with most people, regardless of age, although they can be more demonstrative towards their own family. While Siberian Huskies are generally sociable with other dogs, this crossbreed may on occasion develop aggression towards other dogs due to the Rottweiler heritage, particularly with dogs of the same sex, and they have a high prey drive and may chase cats and other small animals. The trainability of these dogs can vary somewhat, but its not typically an easy task; although they are extremely intelligent and are able to learn quickly, the Rottweiler temperament can be stubborn and the Husky is prone to situational behavior, behaving well in their harness or in the show ring, but ignoring their owners at home.

Rottsky Activity Requirements

This is an extremely athletic and persistent canine and it requires a great deal of physical activity along with mental stimulation to be at their healthiest and most stable. While long walks and vigorous runs are generally appreciated, this canine may also enjoy and excel at alternative activities such as sledding, Schutzhund classes, advanced obedience, or agility training, although it may be more difficult to convince them that swimming or water sports are a good idea. It is also crucial to monitor this crossbreed, particularly when exercising in hot weather as these dogs may be more prone to heat exhaustion than other dogs.

He’s very sassy but listens very well (at home at least) for being a puppy. He picked up on common commands very quickly. We screwed up by not crate training and he will chew anything he can when we leave, even if only for 5-10 minutes. He also likes jumping in the shower to drink the water whether someone is in there or not. Otherwise he is a wonderful dog. I’m super excited for him to experience his first actual snow.

He loves living in Montana and getting to hike out in the woods. Definitely acts up, especially with chewing, when understimulated. Eats somewhat sporadically and inconsistently. Loves other dogs, high prey drive, likes people. Sheds a lot in the summer, gets warm easily. Seemingly no guarding instinct - rarely barks, either when other dogs are alarming. Husky kicks in with training - he definitely decides whether following a command is in his best interests.

I love Leo. He’s slow with learning, expect the potty training. He’s aloof at most times but super cuddly. He wants to lay with me anytime I am laying down. Alerts me when someone is at the door, and knows when he’s in trouble. He’ll whine me to; almost like saying sorry. 🤣 my rotskky is amazing. He’s great with my two year old as well!! We live in an apartment he gets a little antsy. He’s great, couldn’t ask for a better dog.

We rescued Bailey about a month ago, and we could tell from the moment we met that we were a great match! It was a little "iffy" at first because she had been turned in by her previous owners as a "discipline issue" involving a fight with another dog. We found out the inside story and realized it was actually a neglect issue, and since Bailey was so sweet we took a chance. We have not regretted it since! She is so full of love, and super smart...almost too smart. She's also very eager to please, and loves to snuggle. She's a wonderful addition to our family!

Lyla is very protective over me and way too smart for her own good. She is stubborn but will eventually listen if you ask multiple times. She is very vocal and will talk back sometimes. Not a fan of other female dogs since she got spayed, she only likes them if they are submissive to her. Not a fan of people she does not know very well. She is everything I want in a dog though. She likes attention on her own terms and her favorite thing to do is watch squirrels from my balcony. She has a tiny bit of APBT in her but mainly a Rottsky.

Rolo is a big ball of sass. Very vocal. Super high energy which sometimes gets him into trouble. He is sometimes TOO smart, but learns things very quickly. Best cuddler around (unless you get him too excited and he kicks you), very loyal and protective. He will sit at my feet and look out behind me while I’m doing dishes or laundry. He’s very sweet, but he doesn’t get along well with our other male dog. He’s older and tries to show dominance and every once in a while Rolo gets fed up with it. He’s about 80 pounds and it’s seemingly all muscle. Dark brown coat with a white chest and tan eyebrows, beautiful golden eyes and a pink nose. We have to watch what he eats because his digestive system is very sensitive. We love him to bits and we can definitely tell he loves us, too.

we’ve had her since she was 6 weeks old and she’s done great with us, she’s eating well and looking healthy, she isn’t too destructive, she’s a bit difficult to train and she was quite aggressive for a while but she’s know getting trained, she still over protective and a bit difficult to walk but with training i know she’ll do well. She’s adorable and has heterocromia. She mostly has black fur but has bright white fur where Rottweilers usually have their lighter brown fur,, she also has the cutest little eyebrows. Rottskys ears are the cutest. Lola doesn’t really like being alone so she’ll always be with someone even if it’s just sitting on the floor while we’re watching tv

Despite the fact that he plays so much during the day, he loves to tear his beds up. I can’t wait till he grows a little more and stops chewing on everything. He likes chewing on people’s hands and quickly learned that dad doesn’t like it but mom will tolerate it because she feels bad for yelling at him. Overall he’s a very sweet pup and likes attention.
