Pugland Terrier

The Pugland is a hybrid breed mix of the Pug and the West Highland White Terrier. Because both of these breeds are small dogs, the Pugland will be small as well. They rarely get over 12 inches tall and their average weight is about 15 pounds. This breed makes a wonderful family companion and gets along well with other pets. They like kids but should be supervised with small children because they can become snappy if teased or squeezed. The Pugland is a fast learner and is easy to train but they can also be stubborn, so they need positive reinforcement.

Pugland Breed History

The Pugland has not been around long enough to build a history yet so it is best to look at the histories of the Pug and the West Highland White Terrier. The Pug originated in China around 200 B.C. during the Han Dynasty bred from the French Mastiff, Bulldog, and Pekingese. The breed was considered royalty and only owned by Emperors of China at the time. They even had their own soldiers to guard them. When the Pug was brought to Europe by Dutch sailors in the 15th century, they were nicknamed Mopshond and became popular with other royal families. Eventually, they became popular with other families and as they spread around the globe, they were given different names such as Caganlino in Italy, Doguillo in Spain, Carlin in France, and Mops in Germany. During the 1800s, there were two breeding lines, which were the royal dogs of Queen Charlotte and those from Lord and Lady Willoughby de Eresby in Russia and Hungary. During the Victorian Era, they were featured on paintings, statues, and postcards, and they became very popular around the world. In 1885, they were accepted by the American Kennel Club and they are the 32nd most popular breed of dog in the United States. The West Highland White Terrier began in Scotland in the 1800s from the Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, Skye, and Scottish Terriers. They were used to hunt badger, fox, and other vermin. The breed used to be available in other colors but was changed to only white after Colonel Malcolm of Poltalloch accidentally mistook his faithful dog for a fox and shot him. Afterward, the Colonel would only allow these Terriers to be bred with white dogs. The breed was brought to America in 1905 and was accepted by the American Kennel Club three years later. The breed is now the 41st most popular breed in the United States.

Pugland Breed Appearance

Your Pugland is a small dog with short legs and a short torso and a medium length straight tail. They have a medium to long straight coat of normal density with a soft, fluffy undercoat. This breed can come in many colors but is usually white, black, or brown. They may have a light colored beard and chest patch but not all of them have those markings. The Pugland breed has a small rounded head with floppy, triangular ears that are usually furry. Their large, round eyes are dark brown with a curious expression and they have a small, black nose.

Pugland Breed Maintenance

Your Pugland needs to be brushed thoroughly with a pin brush or stiff bristle brush and a metal comb at least four or five times per week. You should spend a good amount of time on your dog's belly, tail, under her arms, and under the neck and ears. Your dog’s ears will also need to be cleaned about once or twice a month and you should also clip their toenails at this time as well. They only need to be bathed when necessary and you should use a special medicated shampoo from your veterinarian because this breed has sensitive skin.

Pugland Temperament

Even though the Pugland is a small dog, they can be as confident as a dog five times their size and will protect their family from anyone or anything they perceive as a threat. They do not usually start fights but will not back down if they or their family are attacked. While they do enjoy playing with other dogs, they should not be trusted with small animals such as kittens, rabbits, or guinea pigs. Training them is usually pretty easy but you have to be patient and consistent because they may be headstrong or try to test their boundaries.

Pugland Activity Requirements

The Pugland needs about 45 to 60 minutes of vigorous activity per day to keep them healthy. If your dog does not get the proper amount of exercise every day, she may develop behavioral issues or bad habits such as chewing on things and barking excessively. Some of the Pugland’s favorite activities may include going for a walk, playing with other dogs at the dog park, agility training, flyball, a game of fetch or catch, swimming, or just chasing the squirrels and rabbits around the yard or park. However, make sure your Pugland is on a leash when not in a fenced area.

Coal is the most loyal, friendly and obedient dogs. We have enjoyed many outdoor activities together. He doesn't like water and won't swim, but he loves the snow. He's had both rear knees surgically repaired, and hasn't had any problems. He is 12 and just had a great check-up, only his eyes are starting to get cloudy. #BestBuddyEver
