Miniature Pinscher
Poodle

The Pinny-Poo is a combination of the Miniature Pinscher and Poodle that can vary in size quite a bit depending on whether the parent Poodle was a toy, miniature, or standard breed. The coat can vary as well, depending on the genes. They are energetic and love to play with their family, be it their humans or other pets. They are good with older children but can be snappy with younger children. The Pinny-Poo makes a good watchdog because they are loyal and protective as well as loving. This breed can be a bit stubborn so training them may take some extra time and patience.

Pinny-Poo Breed History

The Pinny-Poo does not have much of a history yet so you have to consider the histories of the parent breeds, the Miniature Pinscher and the Poodle. The Miniature Pinscher is about 2000 years old and originated in Germany to hunt vermin. They are not related to the Doberman Pinscher, even though they look like them and share the same name. Pinscher actually means terrier in German and this breed is indeed thought to be related to the German Terrier, Dachshund, and Italian Greyhound. They are frequently called a Min-Pin for short and were found on 2000-year-old paintings from the Renaissance period. The German Miniature Pinscher Klub was started in the late 17th century and about 20 years later they were in the Stuttgart Show. Not long after, the breed started becoming popular in the United States and was accepted by the American Kennel Club in 1925. Five years later, in 1930, the Miniature Pinscher Club of America was formed. Another German dog, the Poodle, is one of the oldest known breeds of dog. They are thought to have been around before the first century and statues were found among Egyptian artifacts and drawings. The breed was developed from different European dogs such as the French, Spanish, Hungarian, Russian, German, and Portuguese Water Dogs. Some experts also believe the North African Barbet is part of their heritage. There are many other stories about the Poodle but these are the most commonly believed. They come in three versions, the standard, toy, and miniature, which were all created sometime in the 15th century. They were often used for hunting although soon they were found to be excellent circus dogs and even better family companions. The Poodle has been a member of the American Kennel Club since 1887 and is the 7th most popular breed.

Pinny-Poo Breed Appearance

The Pinny-Poo is a small to medium sized dog, depending on which variety of Poodle is used. In fact, they can range from 5 to 45 pounds and between 8 and 18 inches tall. These dogs have small, round brown or amber eyes, a brown or black nose on a pointed snout, long floppy ears, and their coat can be medium to long, dense, and may be any color from white, black, red, silver, blue, gray, brown, cream, apricot, lemon, fawn, sable, brindle, orange, and pied. They usually have wavy fur but it can also be straight, depending on the genes and it may be hypoallergenic like the Poodle.

Pinny-Poo Breed Maintenance

Because of the Poodle genes, you may have to spend quite a bit of time maintaining their coat. They need to be brushed daily and most Pinny-Poo owners take their dog to be professionally groomed every few months to keep their coat manageable. However, you can do it yourself with trimmers if you learn how. You will also need to bathe your Pinny-Poo every few weeks and clean their ears at this time as well. Be sure to use mild dog shampoo approved by your veterinarian so you do not dry out your Pinny-Poo’s skin. You can trim your dog’s toenails yourself about once a month with nail trimmers or have them done by the groomer or veterinarian.

Miniature Pinschers and Poodles often suffer from bloat, Addison's disease, and hypothyroidism. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Pinny-Poo Temperament

Your Pinny-Poo will make a great family companion due to their loving personality and cuddliness. They enjoy being with their family all the time and may have trouble with separation anxiety if left alone too long. Their sweet temperament and loyalty make them great lap dogs for anyone and while they can take some extra time to train, they are smart and can learn tricks that will entertain you for hours. Once your Pinny-Poo is trained, she is obedient and you should not have any more trouble from her. They are wary of strangers and make good watchdogs but must be introduced to guests.

Pinny-Poo Activity Requirements

The Pinny-Poo needs at least one hour of exercise every day to keep them physically fit and prevent boredom or anxiety. Many dogs who do not get adequate exercise can develop bad habits or behavioral problems like excessive barking or chewing on your personal property. Some great activities for Pinny-Poos include brisk walks, going to the dog park to play with other dogs, swimming, playing catch or flyball, hiking, or just running around in a fenced yard. These dogs are excellent at learning tricks and can also be good at agility competitions or obedience training courses. If your dog is small enough, you can play fetch indoors as well.

So I found Willow on a back road on my way home from work. She was probably only 3wks old at the time. No teeth had popped through her gums. Originally only was going to keep her long enough to train her a bit then foster her out. I’m not really a fan of small breeds. But once the time came to rehome her. Her lively personality proved to be a bit much for the families who tried her out. I already had a boarder collie. And Willow refuses to let her size stop her. She will run her heart out to get a ball or frisbee before my BC dose. And triumphantly prances her way back to me when she snags it first. Since she was such a nice fit to our home and her clown type personality made me smile eventually I decided to keep her. She is happy lounging around in bed all day or going and playing at the parks. So long as she’s with me she is very happy. Not the easiest breed to train. But with some patience they catch on, this breed tries their best to please. I can say this small crazy dog has changed my mind on small breeds. Glad we found each other almost 9years ago now.

Having a Pinny-poo is such a great experience. My pet is the most loving animal in earth, she loves to be around our family, she's protective but not aggressive. I really love her and I'll be super happy if more people adopts these loving beings.

She loves to snuggling and sleep around our neck, under our chin. We have a teacup size, and she bounces like a rabbit when she plays. So cute. Barely barks. Mostly whimpers when she wants you.

Equal parts crazy puppy and snuggly lovebug. He'd run around at the dog park all day, every day if I'd let him. Loves every dog he meets—from a 3-pound Chihuahua to a 100+-pound great dane.

Rocky is a wonderful dog--cheerful, silly, lovable, huggable, and smart. He loves everyone and every dog he meets but barks to warn me of deliveries or visitors. He's sad when we're away and does leaps and somersaults upon our return.

He likes to cuddle and play. He sleeps at my feet and when he jumps he thinks he jumped far and high. When I call his name he'll look at me, get excited and run to me. He also likes hugging my arm. Though he has anxiety when I put him in the playpen. He is a great guard dog and very protective of me. We have other dogs in the house who he likes to play with.

Cuddling
Benny is rambunctious, loyal, curious and cuddly. He loves car rides and tears up his soft toys. He also gets separation anxiety and boredom if left home alone for too long. He likes to run around and play with other dogs, but he can be dog selective. He does well with children and people, but if he is around young kids he needs room to run away or he will growl/snap at them to warn them off. He is stubborn and sometimes decides he's not going in his crate at night or not staying in the car when one of us has to go into the store. You have to be very clear and firm with your expectations because the breed loves to test for dominance, especially with big dogs. The breed also chases vermin - Benny has caught a mouse before. He also loves to chase around smaller dogs, so we have to be careful he's not stressing them out. He is high energy and likes to play, so he does better when he has a yard but apartments are okay as long as he gets out enough. Pinny Poos are smart and learn quickly, which can be a good thing and a bad thing. He knows all of the sit/roll over/shake tricks but it's also been hard to un-train him. He's scared of having his nails clipped, for example, and trying to change that has been difficult. My mom's dog has to literally be sedated before going to the vet and being groomed though, so I try not to be too hard on Benny. He's doing his best. The biggest issue with Benny and pinny poos in general is allergies. He gets skin rashes and yeast infections in his ears. We are still figuring out a grooming/food combination that works but switching him away from corn and wheat foods has stopped the ear infections and slightly improved the rash. We had some success with anti dandruff shampoo and are incorporating an anti fungal for now to see if the skin issue is also caused by yeast. If anyone else is struggling with this, these are the steps we've taken so far. Good luck with yours. They are great dogs if you are an affectionate person and do well if you can get their energy out and keep them engaged/occupied.
