The Mini Foxy Russell is a hybrid of two purebred dogs, the Mini Fox Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier.  The Mini Foxy Russell is the classic definition of Terrier; highly active and courageous.  The Mini Foxy Terrier is recognized by five different canine registrations and competitive associations.  Despite the recognition, little is known about the Mini Foxy Russell, which may also be known as the Foxy Russell.  The Mini Foxy Russell may also vary in appearance because there are no set standards for the hybrid. Families who have this exuberant dog in their household say that though he may be sometimes stubborn, there is never a dull moment!

Mini Foxy Russell Breed History

The Mini Foxy Russell is a designer hybrid between the Jack Russell Terrier and the Mini Fox Terrier.  The resulting hybrid is remarkably healthy and unmistakenly Terrier.  The highly active dog is an excellent match for an equally active family but does need its space to run, jump, and play.  The designer dog's parent breeds are the Jack Russell Terrier, as known as the Parson Russell Terrier and the Mini Fox Terrier, also referred to as the Toy Fox Terrier.  Both parent breeds are closely related as the Jack Russell Terrier split from the Fox Terrier in the 1800s.  Because the parents are so closely related, Mini Foxy Russell owners can review the respective histories and character traits of both parents to understand their hybrid dog better. The Jack Russell Terrier is a clever little Terrier with a lot of energy.  Parson John  Russell developed the breed in England 200 years ago as a little fox hunting Terrier.  Russell lent both of his names to the new dog, which goes by Parson Russell Terrier but more commonly as the Jack Russell Terrier.  As an earth dog, the Jack Russell Terrier's job was to root out foxes from their dens so that hounds could chase them down.  However, Russell also wanted a Terrier type dog he could bring inside, and that could settle down if properly exercised.  The Jack Russell Terrier became a fast favorite among sportsmen and the little dog in both England and the United States.  There may be slight variations in the standards for Jack Russell Terriers, especially concerning the dog's height, but overall, the personality of the Jack Russell remains the same. The Mini Fox Terrier, which is also referred to as the Toy Fox Terrier, is an American Terrier that developed from the Smooth Fox Terrier of England.  Fanciers of the Smooth Fox Terrier desired a smaller version and the breed was crossbred with various small Terrier type dogs including the Manchester Terrier and the Chihuahua to obtained the desired stature.  The Mini Fox Terrier was also bred as a companion, and less independent-minded traits were selected to achieve the right balance between a high-energy Terrier and that of a lap-loving companion.  The American Kennel Club recently recognized the breed in 2003 though the desired look and traits of the Mini Fox Terrier were established by the 1930s. Both parent breeds have close ties to the Fox Terriers of England and have only deviated from their alpha breed in the last 200 years.  The Mini Foxy Russell will exhibit traits of both parent breeds, but the hybrid is more predictable than most due to the lineage of its parents.

Mini Foxy Russell Breed Appearance

The Mini Foxy Russell is a small hybrid with a sturdy, square frame.  The legs are medium-length and straight with well-defined muscles.  The Mini Foxy Russell's coat is mainly white though other color variations are known and usually includes colorful points of red and black on its face and ears.  The coat may vary depending on which parent breed the hybrid most resembles but it's usually smooth and lays flat.  Short, wiry hair, similar to the Jack Russell parent may adorn the legs or face.  The Mini Foxy Russell's head is small and round with a long tapering muzzle and a black nose.  Large round eyes of dark brown or black are prominent and set high on the head.  The tail on the Mini Foxy Russell is carried high and is short.

Mini Foxy Russell Breed Maintenance

Maintaining the Mini Foxy Russell's coat is easy with weekly brushing.  The hybrid is not a hypoallergenic dog and will shed moderately.  Weekly brushing with a medium bristle or pin brush will help reduce the amount of loose and dead hair.  Check your dog's ears for any build-up while brushing him and remove it with a veterinarian approved solution or pet wipes as necessary.  Instead of bathing the Mini Foxy Russell, use pet wipes to clean his coat.  The Mini Foxy Russell has sensitive skin, and frequent bathing may irritate or inflame it.  The Mini Foxy Russell is not known to drool and usually doesn't have a doggy smell.  However, if you detect any foul odor, check him for any dirt or build up in his ears as well as his skin for any issues.

Mini Foxy Russells often suffer from a range of common canine health problems. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Wag! Mini Foxy Russell Temperament

The Mini Foxy Russell is an excitable dog with high energy and not well suited for novice dog owners.  They tend to be excellent alarm barkers and will bark at strangers; however, if they don't feel threatened, the Mini Foxy Russell warms up to strangers quickly.  They are an excellent family dog for active households but are not well-suited to young children who may tease them as this hybrid can be snappish.  The Fox Terrier parent helps to even out some of the Terrier qualities, including its stubbornness and independence.  This hybrid may not always get along with other dogs and especially with smaller pets, like cats or hamsters.  Smaller animals will excite the prey mind; however, with proper socialization at earlier ages, it is possible for a Mini Foxy Russell to live in harmony with other pets, but supervision is always suggested.

Mini Foxy Russell Activity Requirements

The Mini Foxy Russell is a high-energy dog in a compact size.  They love running, jumping, and digging.  Their energy requirements and high intelligence mean they need daily exercise that works both the body and the mind.  Fenced-in backyards are ideal for this hybrid, but the yard must be secure with a high enough fence.  The Mini Foxy Russell is known to jump very high as well as dig for escape routes.  Supervised playtime is the preference and will give an owner the opportunity to bond with the Min Foxy Russell.  The Mini Foxy Russell does not have a climate preference but does best in temperate environments.  However, the hybrid should not be left alone outside for any extended length of time.  This hybrid is not the best choice for apartment living because of its high energy and exercise needs but can adapt.

He is a very stubborn dog, I socialised him from the day we got him but he only likes my Great Dane and is scared of other dogs, he definitely has prey hunting instincts and refuses to socialise or listen to any training around our livestock animals even after I got professional training. He has four dog beds in my room but still likes to sleep in my bed after having a bath and is scared of my parrot who shares a room and backyard with him. Overall I quite like this breed, but would prefer if they were easier to train and not as stubborn.

We absolutely love our Lily! She is extremely active and very loving with us and a few of our friends. But does not like other dogs and some people even though we have always socialized her from day one at 3 months old. We have trained her to be nice and she comes when I tell her to. she warms up to others in a few minutes time.

She's incredibly smart and funny. She's very vocal, and will gently howl when she's enjoying a meal. She loves her snacks and will cry when it's dinner time, telling us to hurry up! She loves attention and pats, and knows her daily routine well.

Bites everything, sleeps sometimes, wakes me up early, loves his food, pees and poos on the tiles, trying to potty train him, give him baths once a week using the puppy shampoo, bought him squeeky plushy toys, sometimes he'd rather sleep on the tiles then his comfortable bed, crys whenever you leave him, hates the play pen we need to put him in when we aren't home. Overall, he's still my adorable baby.

Super friendly, affectionate, playful and fun dog. Very smart and loves to learn new things. Little explorer. Trained not to bark. Needs daily long walks, and most importantly intense play sessions with humans. Great with other dogs, little kids, but too high energy for elderly or inactive people. After a good play session loves to snuggle up to humans, often for several hours. Best small dog for active singles, couples or families. Must train and play with your dog.
