The Maspyr is a large, even giant-sized dog that serves as a family protector and companion.  It is a designer mix between the purebred Mastiff, considered a colossus of a dog, and the purebred Great Pyrenees, an equally large dog.  The size and power of the Maspyr are intimidating and requires an owner who can properly handle the dog and who promotes healthy socialization.  Novice dog owners who are not exposed to large dog ownership are not an ideal match for the Maspyr.  Only two hybrid associations currently recognize the Maspyr; the Designer Breed Registry and the International Designer Canine Registry.

Maspyr Breed History

The Maspyr is a designer dog of two large purebred dogs; the Mastiff and the Great Pyrenees.  The Maspyr is not as popular a hybrid as some others, most likely due to its size and dogs may vary in size, weight, and appearance due to the lack of hybrid standards.  However, the Maspyr makes for a great family protector, and owners can review the histories of the respective parent breeds for a better understanding of their Maspyr. The Mastiff is a descendant of the Molosser dogs, who were ancient protectors of flocks and homes.

The Mastiff is a well-documented protector and dog of war throughout the world.  However, the modern-day Mastiff developed in England during the 15th Century as a protector mainly in part due to the Lyme Hall strain of Mastiffs that were bred between the 15th and 20th centuries.  The Mastiff thrived in England during this time; however, the breed faced extinction early in the 20th century during World Wars I and II due to food shortages.  Luckily breeds imported to the United States and Canada were able to sustain the breed.  The American Kennel Club recognized the Mastiff as part of the Working Group in 1885.

The Great Pyrenees has origins as a sheepdog in the Pyrenees Mountains, where the breed developed over 5,000 years.  The Great Pyrenees was once considered a peasant's dog used for the flock, but it caught the attention of King Louis the XIV in the 17th century and was declared the Royal Dog of France.  As a popular dog among the nobility, the Pyrenees changed its role to estate protector.  The Pyrenees left Europe for Newfoundland, Canada, where the breed experienced great popularity.  The American Kennel Club first recognized the Great Pyrenees in 1933, and the breed enjoys moderate popularity today.

Maspyr Breed Appearance

The Maspyr is a large hybrid, bordering on giant and is an excellent guardian for the home.  It most often resembles the Great Pyrenees with its head set near-level with the shoulders.  The coat is usually profuse and a light shade, though dark markings are also common on the body and face.  The Maspyr's frame is sturdy and powerful with a large brushed tail that hangs below the level of the body but curls upward.  The Maspyr's head is large, and the muzzle is medium in length and a happy expression to the mouth and lips.  The eyes of the Maspyr are large, round, and brown with a gentle expression as well.

Maspyr Breed Maintenance

The Maspyr has a think, dense coat and is considered a heavy shedding dog.  However, the coat is easy to maintain with just one weekly grooming session.  Using a bristle brush, remove the dead and loose hair from the coat to help with shedding concerns.  The coat is silk and soft so dirt does not cling to it and will easily fall off during grooming.  The size of the Maspyr means weekly grooming may take up to 30 minutes to finish.  Bathing the Maspyr is not recommended unless necessary because the hybrid's skin is highly sensitive.  While grooming your Maspyr, check his ears for dirt and debris, which may become trapped in the densely coated ears that drop down.  Regular teeth brushing and nail clipping will also keep your Maspyr in peak condition.

Maspyrs often suffer from pulmonic stenosis. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Our pet insurance tool lets you compare plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Maspyr Temperament

The Maspyr is a gentle giant of a dog that is very protective of its family, especially children.  The Maspyr may tend to bark if it resembles the Great Pyrenees, but even if it leans toward the quiet Mastiff, the sheer size of the Maspyr will deter most people.  As a large guardian, the Maspyr needs an owner who can help him socialize well.  The Maspyr is not usually dog-friendly or other pet-friendly but this also depends on proper socialization and the hybrid can learn to live well with other pets.  When it comes to training, the Maspyr tends to be hard-headed and again, requires a strong, active dog owner to help train it.  The energy levels on Maspyr are medium to high and he will need daily exercise.

Maspyr Activity Requirements

The Maspyr is an active dog that requires daily exercise of medium to high intensity.  Large breed dogs tend to be much slower, but the active Maspyr is made for high energy activities and will need to run around.  The Maspyr is not well-suited for apartment living because it needs space and a yard to run in.  Larger homes with backyards are ideal for these dogs.  The Maspyr also prefer colder climates but can tolerate warmer ones.  However, be mindful of your dog's heat levels and always provide enough water and shade while outside becuase this hybrid may overheat easy.

Our boy Ursa is 4 months old and weighs 30lbs. He is very friendly, especially towards women and children. Ursa's energy level is perfect for us, he gets out for 10 to 15 minutes 3 times a day. It has been -40 degrees here and he is coping well with the cold. We got him house trained and it only took him two days to get accustomed to going to the bathroom outside at his new home. He is a voracious eater, and we are putting him on a raw food diet starting this week. Ursa barely barks and just wants to be friends with our cat, our friends and their dogs and is particularly interested in our bearded dragon. It is taking him some time to learn to be extra gentle with the lizard, but he is a quick study and respond very well to commands. I would recommend this breed to anyone who works lots as he is great left on his own.

As a Retired couple that spend time with the grandkids this has been the best we have had over the years. Very gentle with the little ones, very rambunctious when playing with adults. He's never scolded but understand NO! Very perceptive when the little ones are in the back yard he has 1/2 acre as his kingdom he constantly checks on the kids and has alerted us to a snake at 6 months old. He has a proximity collar to operate the electronic dog door. He has his own room and couch and his favorite spot is head on my lap.... He's sensitive to our moods so we have started his training to become a Therapy dog during reading programs at the local elementary school and local Nursing Home.

So far I love the breed though they can be stubborn. His Mom was mastiff cross Pyrenees and his dad was Pyrenees cross. House training has been difficult but it's coming. Great with kids and shows interest in horses. Out my my 3 dogs he's the only one that keeps with my kids which I love! We are hoping he can become a house guardian. Time will tell. At 3 months he's 31 lbs!

We bought a house and moved in late April 2019, Buttercup then 7 mos old, needed someone more to play with as we were busier than we expected we would be with home and yard improvements. He is a perfect addition to our family and our two babies are the best of friends.

My mother in law found a listing for his litter online around Christmas 2019. I was pregnant with my first child and we thought if we were going to have pets again, it should be the right time to get one. We wanted a puppy so that it would grow with our baby. The listing we found Harold in was from a breeder but this particular litter happened by accident and so their pricing was super affordable for us. So we went and got him! We were also in the middle of moving from an apartment to a house with a yard so it was perfect. The house we ended up buying already had a doggy door and it took him a day to figure out how to use it. After that, training him with basic commands was also a breeze. But of course my husband and I worked on him. I even got him to pay attention to my hand signals. Harold is only 5 months older than my son so these two have a special bond. I saw it form from the day we came back from the hospital with him. Harold was very cautious and patient around our baby during the first few months. He kept adjusting to my son's capabilities and age. Even now, my son is coming into his toddler personality and Harold has stayed careful around him. Definitely a great breed. Perfect for families.

Guard dog
Artemis was from an accidental litter between a Mastiff mother and a working Great Pyrenees father. She was supposed to be a guard dog for sheep, but she didn’t care about livestock, she wanted to guard humans. So she is a house pet. She is very watchful with a powerful deep bark, but friendly once introduced. She is mostly a couch potato, but likes to keep an eye on the people and the front yard, in case of things to bark at. Safe with cats, dogs, chickens, but not with quail. “Talks” a lot, sheds like mad, has been healthy.

Question - My pet
Question

How much should my male maspyr weight at 9 months old?

Answer
Weight guidelines in mixed breeds are always variable as it depends which genes they've inherited from each side. Rather than focusing on weight we should assess the Body Condition Score and ensure he is a healthy 4 or 5 out of 9 at all times. As a rough guide, most will have completed about 70% of their growth at this age and will weigh between 90 and 110 lbs.
