Foodle Breed History

The Poodle is an ancient breed and is thought to have been around in Germany during the first century. There are many drawings and statues of similar dogs from that time period. They are believed to have come from the North African Barbet and several different water dogs such as the French, Hungarian, Portuguese, German, Russian, and Spanish. However, others believe they are descendants of herding dogs of Asia brought with the Ostrogoth and German Goth Tribes at that time. The Standard and Miniature Poodles were used to hunt waterfowl and truffles but the Toy Poodle was bred mainly as a companion of the rich and noble. The breed also became popular for performing tricks in the circus, discovered by gypsies during the 1800s. The Poodle was acknowledged by the American Kennel Club in 1887 and it is now the 7th most popular dog breed in the United States. The Toy Fox Terrier is a cross of the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Manchester Terrier, and the Chihuahua. They were one of the few breeds that originated in the United States in the 1800s. The breed was used mainly for hunting rodents and squirrels. The Smooth Fox Terrier is a mix of the Old English Terrier, Bull Terrier, Black and Tan Terrier, Beagle, and Greyhound. The Toy Fox Terrier is small enough to go into the smaller holes and areas where their prey can hide, making them the better and faster hunting partner. They were not officially recognized by the AKC until 2003 and are the 116th most popular dog breed in the United States.

Foodle Breed Appearance

The Foodle is a very small breed (some are small enough to be considered a toy breed) that are usually under 12 inches high and weigh about 9 to 13 pounds. Their coat is most often thick and curly or wavy like the Toy Poodle or it can be fine and thin like the Toy Fox Terrier. They can come in almost any color such as black, brown, tan, white, cream, or a combination of these colors. They have floppy ears, a small, round head, long, furry tail, and skinny legs. Their eyes are small and dark and their nose is black. They have a broad chest and a long muzzle.

Foodle Breed Maintenance

The Foodle is actually considered to be hypoallergenic because they rarely cause allergic reactions but they do shed a small amount when you hold them. You should brush them with a hard bristle brush at least two or three times a week to promote good circulation and skin health and trim their nails when needed. Clean their ears with cotton balls once a week and watch for earwax buildup and ear mites, which show up as a black accumulation within the ear. Because the Foodle is susceptible to skin conditions, you should only use shampoo or soap recommended by your veterinary care provider. Brush their teeth with a toothpaste made specially for dogs at least a few times a week.

Foodle Temperament

This breed is very cuddly and huggable but you have to watch them with small children because they are susceptible to injury due to their size. Even though they are small, they are courageous and will take on any size animal or human that threatens its family so they make good guard dogs. They will bark loudly to let you know when danger is nearby. They like other pets but need to be socialized early and properly. Because they are so smart, they can be taught tricks easily and quickly. Training them is also easy, but be sure to use positive reinforcement rather than physical punishment.

Foodle Activity Requirements

Your Foodle needs about 60 to 90 minutes of high level exercise every day to keep them healthy and well behaved. A dog that does not get enough physical activity can become bored and anxious and may develop behavioral problems like excessive barking or chewing on things. This breed is good at running and jumping and would enjoy Frisbee, fetch, and Flyball as well as agility courses and obedience training. Other activities your Foodle may enjoy include hiking, jogging, walking, visiting the dog park, swimming, or just running around in the yard. They should be supervised when outdoors because they are small enough to be prey for large birds and other animals.
