EngAm Bulldog Breed History

With the ancient Mastiff as an ancestor The English Bulldog is often described as a dignified and sensitive canine. In fact, one can call him distinguished and of noble appearance. He had his beginnings in the 13th century and was often depicted in many historical works. Originally put to work in the bull-baiting ring, the Bulldog (both American and English are now the happy mascots of no less that 40 universities in the United States.  Now known as a calm and loving breed, his ferocious side has long since been bred out. The American Bulldog is the closest relative of the English Bulldog in the United States, having arrived in the 1800’s with immigrants to the country who brought their dogs with them. In the Americas, this line of Bulldog was popular as a working dog for farmers and ranchers in the deep South. During the war, the breed almost died out, with those dogs surviving kept on farms mainly in the south-east where they protected the farm and worked as cattle and livestock dogs. John D. Johnson of Summerville, Georgia was the main person responsible for keeping the breed from becoming extinct by rounding up and breeding the best examples of the breed he could find.

EngAm Bulldog Breed Appearance

A large dog with an average weight of 70 to 110 pounds, he stands 20 to 27 inches tall. The EngAm Bulldog is a stocky and strong breed. His muscular front legs stand shorter than the back and his stance when at rest is one of power and dignity. The dapper EngAm can be found in white with red patches, brindle and fawn. Their coat is typically short and rough to the touch, their ears are turned over, and the tail is carried straight. The eyes of the EngAm Bulldog make a special statement and are clear and bright.

EngAm Bulldog Breed Maintenance

Grooming requirements for the EngAm are considered low to moderate. It is recommended that the EngAm be brushed two to three times per week to maintain a healthy coat and remove dirt. Because he has a short, smooth coat the slicker brush will work well to remove loose fur. Bathing should only occur when necessary so as to not impact the natural oils in the dog’s skin. Bulldogs can be prone to skin irritation so be certain to use dog friendly products only, taking care to make sure his wrinkles and folds are always clean and dry. Not to be neglected, the teeth need brushing a few times a week and the nails should be trimmed twice a month.

Bulldogs often suffer from difficulty breathing, cherry eye, and heatstroke. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Brought to you by Pet Insurer, Wag! EngAm Bulldog Temperament

The EngAm tends to be gentle and affectionate, always up for a good cuddle. He loves to be social and is happiest when receiving attention. The EngAm is playful, though often stubborn and will do his best to get his way. This may make training challenging; the right family for an EngAm will have patience. Usually the EngAm is aloof with strangers until gauging whether or not they are friendly, making him a good guard dog. They fit right in with children but should be given the chance to get used to the noise and antics of little ones when he is a puppy. He gets along well with other dogs and animals but as in all cases, should be introduced to them at a young age and given plenty of opportunity throughout life to interact with others.

EngAm Bulldog Activity Requirements

The EngAm Bulldog is not a particularly active breed and sometimes may appear more interested in sleeping than in other activities. As with most dogs, exercise is important and your EngAm Bulldog can be taken for walks, given the opportunity for outdoor play and allowed many trips to the dog park. While it may appear that your EngAm is not interested in more activity, should you notice he appears to be acting out (more restless or destructive than usual) or seems bored, it may point toward his needing more activity; in that case, supervise him in the yard and perhaps get him interested in a game of fetch.

He is very sweet and also protective. I am a stay at home mom, so he has bonded the most with me being by my side all the time. He does tend to try and get in between my husband and I. He also tries to bathe me multiple times a day he will just lick my skin for like half an hour. I think he has our roles confused and thinks I am his baby.

Such a affectionate dog , he loves kids and to be the center of attention, he loves to cuddle and play with other dogs and animals , he is stubborn but very intelligent, he reminds me the beagle breed but with bigger muscles and less energy.I simply love him and recommend to have one it will certainly fill your heart.

Learning (Mo loves to learn)
I've been trying to get Mo to take a bribe for giving me sugar for over a year now. (Its the only thing it has ever taken more than a week for him to get). When I tell to give me sugar he'll turn his head stubbornly one way or the other. A few days ago I was trying to give him chocolate chip cookies for sugar which are his absolute favorite. Still no sugar. So jokingly I put my hands over my face pretending to cry. Immediately Mo jumps up and gives me all kinds of sugar. He knew all along what I wanted he just wasn't going to be forced to give his sugar away.
