The Chowpit is a mix between the Chow Chow and the American Pit Bull. This playful canine may have the loyal and independent personality of an American Pit Bull and the overprotective, loving and dominant traits of  the Chow Chow. Not for the novice owner, this attractive dog, while a keen companion to those he knows well, will need guidance and consistent training to allow him to feel comfortable in all situations and with all whom he meets.

Chowpit Breed History

Genetic studies point to the Chow Chow as one of 14 ancient breeds and is thought to be a descendant of the Tibetan Mastiff and the Samoyed. This breed, which likely originated over 2000 years ago in China was said to have exceptional stamina, aggression and strength and were designed as herding, hunting and guard dogs. Sadly a source of food as well as a trusted guardian, this dog's roots go back to the Han Dynasty. From Asia, to Europe, and then to the United States, the Chow Chow is thought to be one of the original breeds of canine. His blue-black tongue is only seen in one other breed, the Chinese Shar-Pei. The Chow Chow was added to the American Kennel Club roster in 1903. The American Pitbull Terrier was originally developed in England and has ancestry from Mastiff-type dogs, Terriers (probably the Fox Terrier and the English Terrier), and the Bulldog. Known more formally as the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier has a history of exactly that - working in the pits as a fighter. Unfortunately, the work he was forced to do has given him the reputation of a canine that can only be aggressive. He is known to be a loving, gentle dog if given the proper training and care. He is registered with the American Kennel Club as the American Staffordshire Terrier, since 1936.

Chowpit Breed Appearance

The Chowpit is strong, stocky and muscular as the body form of this hybrid takes after the American Pit Bull parent. A medium to large breed dog that often stands rather low to the ground, these heavily built dogs have wide jaws that have a strong grip.  The Chow Chow inheritance means that the muzzle is often of medium length and sports a black nose. Given the Chow Chow influence again, his feet may appear webbed and sturdy.  His tail can be either held straight out or sickle shaped with a slight curl over the back. The fur can be similar to either breed in texture and length but typically the American Pitbull coat is seen. His eyes are dark and give the Chowpit the alert and intelligent expression that is a combination of both parental genes.

Chowpit Breed Maintenance

Chowpits tend to have short to medium length hair and the slicker brush works perfectly to glide through the coat, smoothing the fur and removing loose clumps. This hybrid does not have a doggy smell and rather than bathing him often, owners can use a pet wipe to clean the coat when needed. Some Chowpit hybrids will have a few wrinkles, most often on the face and neck, which will need to be checked often for moisture and dirt accumulation. Gently wipe the folds and make sure that they are dry so that bacteria does not build up within the folds. If you brush his teeth regularly, you will avoid costly dental bills that may be necessary if the teeth begin to decay. Clipping his strong nails may take effort so train him from a young age to sit quietly through the procedure. He may in fact, learn to like the grooming routine and consider it time that he gets one on one attention from you.

Chowpit Temperament

Both the Chow Chow and the American Pit Bull have a strong personality. Your Chowpit may be stubborn and aloof at times but can also be friendly, goofy, and quite affectionate. He will need obedience training from a young age and it is recommended that he continue the training through various levels. Doing so will allow him to gain a sense of leadership from you, which is important when one owns a sturdy and powerful dog. Taking him through several levels of training will permit him to show off his intelligence as well, which is always fun for both trainer and trainee. This hybrid is ideal for a home without children - he is large and heavy and may unintentionally knock children over while at play. The Chowpit is best suited to an active household with strong personalities within it, so that he can thrive as a member of the family. Give him plenty of opportunity for interaction with adults and other canines in the proper setting so that he can gain socialization skills that will serve him well.

Chowpit Activity Requirements

The American Pit Bull medium to high energy level will be balanced out by the laid back nature of the Chow Chow. Your hybrid will need to keep active in order to be at his happiest; remember the instincts of the parents are that of working and having a job to do. Walk him two or three times a day briskly and with a purpose so that he will feel calm and relaxed once you get home. Besides the obedience classes, a well-socialized Chowpit may enjoy agility training, flyball, games of fetch, hiking and running alongside you. He will need a home with a securely fenced yard; he is not a hybrid meant for an apartment.
