While the debate rages as to whether the Bully Kutta originated in India or Pakistan, it is a rare dog that has not spread far from its place of origin. This dog is an aggressive Mastiff dog of huge proportions! Just the size and build of the dog is intimidating, let alone its deep threatening voice. The nickname 'the Beast of the East' sums up this dog. Originally the Bully was used to guard flocks, property and people; they did their time in the past as a fighting dog in the gruesome sport of dog fighting. New legalisation made the sport illegal in India, and the Bully is building a better future and reputation as a companion dog. The Bully Kutta needs an experienced owner who can train the dog and build strong bonds to gain the dog's respect. This breed is not a dog for first time owners! It can be a dangerous dog in the wrong hands. But raised lovingly within a family environment and given plenty of opportunities to socialise with other people and animals, efforts will produce a noble, loyal dog. They are kind and tolerant of children that they grow up with, but are not so mellow with other pets. A lot depends on the dog and  the training as to how they interact with other dogs. Some are aggressive to all other dogs and pets, others just to dogs of the same sex. Beautiful, powerful and a dog to respect, this is the Bully Kutta.

Bully Kutta Breed History

Where did this huge dog come from, you may ask! Many theories abound, but the one that has the most credibility is that the British troops who invaded India in the 1700's brought their Mastiff dogs with them. These dogs then inter-bred with other local large dogs. Another theory states that Xerxes the First brought the breed when he marched towards India in 486 BC. A rival theory is that the Central Asian Mastiff has influenced the Pakistan strain. But while the exact development history remains ambiguous, the Bully certainly isn't. This solid beast of a dog was used for hunting large game such as bears and wild boars during the Mughal Empire. The breed is fearless, and will risk their own life to achieve their goal. They will fight to the death, they are that committed. A dark time in their history saw the Bully Kutta used for dog fighting. This blood sport saw only the strongest dogs surviving, with fighting dogs taught to be aggressive through training and harsh methods. Now that the 'sport' of dog fighting has been declared illegal, the Bully has a chance to regain their reputation and gain back some of the respectability that they lost during this bleak period. This is why it is so important to have the right owner to raise this dog. In the right hands, the Bully Kutta has the chance to become the loyal and dedicated dog that they were born to be. While the breed is available in Pakistan, it is quite rare in the rest of the world.

Bully Kutta Breed Appearance

The Bully Kutta is a massive dog, a true powerhouse of thickly boned and highly muscled dog. They are truly impressive dogs, weighing up to 170 pounds or more for a mature dog. They look solid, and they are solid. This dog has a thick, sturdy body with a well muscled neck and a solid blocky head. Their ears are held high on the head, and are small and rounded at the top. The muzzle is long and very powerful, with a strong set of teeth that meet in a scissors bite. Their lips are quite pendulous, and they do drool a lot. The Bully Kutta can often have a black muzzle, but not always. Their legs are long and lean; these massive creatures can stand up to 44 inches in height at the withers for a male dog. Females are slightly shorter, coming in at 36 inches at the withers. The tail is long and narrow and held quite high. The Bully, or the Beast of the East (the dog's nickname), has a short dual layered, smooth coat that requires minimal brushing with a stiff bristle brush. Although the predominant color is usually white, they do come in black, fawn, white and brown, and black and white.

Bully Kutta Breed Maintenance

Although large in size, the Bully Kutta has small maintenance requirements due to their short straight coat. They are a healthy breed, free from most congenital health problems. Their coat requires a strong bristle brush to remove any loose hair - this brushing need only be done once a week or every second week. Bathing this large dog can be a chore, but luckily they tend to keep themselves clean;  a good rub down with a damp cloth should suffice most of the time. If your white dog has rolled in the mud, well, that is another story! If a hose down (season permitting ) doesn't cut it, then you will have to roll up your sleeves and bathe the beast! Use of a mild dog shampoo is best, as this breed does seem to have a high sensitivity to skin allergies. The Bully Kutta requires plenty of exercise, training, socialising. But health wise, a quick rub down, a wipe out of the ears, and a teeth brush session once a week should be enough to keep them maintained. Their toenails may need trimming if they are not wearing them down naturally. Be gentle when you clip that you don't cut into the sensitive nail bed.

Bully Kutta Temperament

The Bully Kutta has a reputation of being an intelligent noble dog, with a great personality. They can make a delightful companion for a strong, experienced owner. It is important to stress the word  'experienced' if you are considering this breed of dog. They can be a dangerous breed if not controlled and raised right. They need a dominant strong owner. Not an aggressive owner, but a strong willed owner whom they can respect. Otherwise the Bully can be dominating and very territorial. They need to understand what you expect of them, and that aggression will not be tolerated. For a dog whose very size, build and deep voice is intimidating enough, they don't need to develop that aggressive streak. This dog can respond well to training if it is interesting, but can be willful and decide they have had enough if it is boring. The trainer needs the experience to vary the exercises, and limit the time spent on each section of the training. With perseverance and a lot of patience, the Bully can become a delightful companion. They will guard you, your family and the property earnestly, and are devoted creatures. But respect for their size and the breed's aggressive inclination puts the onus on you, the owner, to do your utmost to raise this dog correctly. Do that right and you will have a dog that surpasses your highest wish.

Bully Kutta Activity Requirements

The Bully Kutta is a large, active dog and they need a lot of room to move around in. It’s not adviseable to have them in an apartment for this reason. The Bully is intelligent and will respond well to training and socialisation; both these things are vital for this breed as they can be very aggressive and protective. Start training your dog the moment they are born ... well, perhaps a week or two later. But the sooner, the better, and spend a good chunk of time with the dog to allow for bonding to you properly. While noble and regal, they are a dog that has been used for dog fighting and guarding of property and stock for many years;  it is in their nature to bite first and ask questions later, so socialising is so important. While they can be prone to lazing around, they need to have regular exercise each day to bring out the best in them. Keep them on a leash as they can be strong willed and decide to go a different way than you! Some of the Bully dogs are not good mixers with other dogs. For this reason, keep them restrained when out in public. Raised respectively and bonded to the family, the Bully Kutta can be a loyal family pet, great with the family children. This is a dog that needs to have a ton of love and affection showered on them from an early age to be a well rounded dog.

I adopted my Bully Kutta at 10 months of age when he was abandoned by his previous owner. Initially he was very insecure and did not let me out of sight. He was also very scared of loud sounds and new places. Slowly with a lot of love and time, he has blossomed into a loving family dog who is very protective of everyone. He is excellent with kids and even other animals including cats, birds etc. He is however aggressive with large male dogs and fights them if he can but still only to show his dominance. I got him neutered at 1.5 years of age as he had started to show more aggression towards male dogs. This has calmed him down a lot.He is very strong but I have trained him well and he behave very well outside. He is very very intelligent and learns new commands instantly. Definitely the best dog ever and one that demands lot of love constantly. He has a strong personality and maintains his alpha dog image outside while at home he likes to be a playful cuddly puppy. I make sure he gets enough exercise everyday as we live in an apartment. He is a happy dog overall.

I might have to disagree a well known fact that bully kutta's are not for first time owners. I am a first time dog owner and I've not faced any issues so far. The experience is amazing, loving and comfortable. She's very attentive, very intelligent, very curious and easily trainable. She does all the basic obedience very well, walks without pulling, meets dogs & strangers with confidence. Barks only when needed. It's a magnificent and elegant dog breed which demands love, time and exercise. If you can afford these three things then your journey with a Bully Kutta will be unforgettable.

My bully kurta (Optimus) is a very affectionate towards me an and my family ,he is very alert and highly energetic dog . He is just 4 months old but almost size of fully grown India stray dogs , weighs around 27 kg , has white coat with black spots.

Am from Kerala, I bought it from pak area on 45 days age! at the beginning stage dog has a lot of climate issues like skin allergic and tiredness! But whatever it’s after a 1 year It’s is good dog, it had reach 29 inch sholder size and weight up to 54 kg! Usually I feed it with Mera dog food and raw chicken ! But I don’t know at what age is the Dog will take full grown! Now my dog is 16 month old and still it is 29 inch !

Very very aggressive on other dogs . Early training and upto 18 months socialised training is must. The owner might have experience of aggressive dog handling and it’s character and behaviour. After 13 months it starts to shows aggression on other dogs. On other hand I have pitbull along with Bullykutta they not fights because they brought up together at 3 months old onwards. They are not separated or tied. freedom full dogs living together and both are males .

Bully Kutta is a very powerful and intelligent dog breed, After 1 year of their age they start to show their intimidation. Remember, only people who have experience with large dogs should own this breed. My bully is around 15-16 months old now and has gain a height of 30 inches. Weighing over 55+ kg , He's very strong and needs proper handling whenever around other dogs.
