As a hybrid dog, the American French Bulldog is a healthy breed getting the best of the inherited traits from the two purebreds it originated from. This hybrid dog is typically sweet in personality, affectionate and friendly. They are loyal and protective by nature and have tons of energy. This dog needs a lot of exercise and will enjoy any game the family wants. They can be challenging to train and will require lots of your patience and perseverance. They are people dogs and love to be with the family, and can get lonely if left alone for too long. They are usually great with children, but as always, supervise young children at all times.
It is hard to find information about the starting date and origin of this hybrid dog. Because the parent breeds have been around for some time, this hybrid may have begun some time ago, but there is no written documentation to support this theory. The two breeds it originated from have been around for a long time, the American Bulldog since the time of Caesar around 1066, while the French Bulldog began later in the 19th century in Nottingham England. This fact may have you asking why it is called a French Bulldog when it originated in England. Lace makers in England are responsible for this; they decided to breed a miniature version of the English Bulldog. When the industrial revolution drove the lace makers to France, the craftspeople took their small dogs with them, and they became very popular in France. Given the name of French Bulldog, the name has stuck. The American Bulldog has had a checkered past; it was used originally in blood sports such as bull baiting for gambling and entertainment. They then became protectors against feral pigs and became popular once again. Since then they have regained their respectability as loving family pets. It would be fair to say that the new American French Bulldog has similar characteristics of loyalty and enthusiasm, and is curious, sweet, and very personable. The breed has produced a dog of average size somewhere between the American Bulldog and the French Bulldog size. Their stocky build and protective nature make them a dedicated family dog.
Stocky comes to mind when describing the American French Bulldog. The body is muscular and solid, not fat nor flabby. They have a more athletic shape than their parent breed, and are shorter than the American Bulldog but taller than the French Bulldog, coming in somewhere in the middle. These dogs present a smooth coated medium dog that has a low-slung body and large head. The shoulders are normally wide, and they have sturdy limbs. The general appearance suggests strength, stability, and vigor. The American French Bulldog is a kind and resolute dog, and courageous (but not vicious or aggressive). They have round dark eyes that are set wide apart, as are their bat shaped ears. The tail is long and whip-like. They look like a working dog but can fit into family life extremely well.
The American French Bulldog has a short, dense coat that requires minimal grooming. While considered a moderate shedder, a weekly brushing with a firm bristle brush helps to minimise that problem. They are a clean dog, needing a bath only when they have either rolled in mud or something stinky. During brushing it is an ideal time to do a quick health check on your dog. This observation requires looking to see if there are any skin complaints, cuts, or lumps that may need attention. If you live in an area where fleas and ticks live, you can take this grooming time to ensure that none have moved in to your dog’s fur to live. The American French Bulldog is very easy to care for which makes it attractive to families. Toenails, eyes, teeth and ears are the main thing to check, ensuring they are all healthy. Teaching your young dog to accept you brushing his teeth will help later in life.

This hybrid breed shows intense loyalty and devotion to its family, and would unhesitatingly lay down its life for them. These dogs like to be with their family which can lead to separation anxiety. Surprisingly, these dogs are real softies with their loved ones and can be incredibly gentle and caring. When the American French Bulldog is well socialised, they are trustworthy around young children, but because of their solid build may play a bit ‘rough’ at times, not aware that they may accidentally injure a small person during boisterous play time. This breed needs a strong leader, or it can become stubborn and even snappish. They need to have consistent rules. They can be challenging to train, needing plenty of perseverance and patience. The American French Bulldog is an energetic breed that likes to be taken for walks or indulged in games. They are very protective of their home and make good watchdogs.
The American French Bulldog enjoys a daily walk, and it will keep your dog fit and healthy. Younger dogs enjoy jogging alongside your bicycle, while older dogs are better with a walk. This hybrid dog needs plenty of mental stimulation, or they can become bored and start getting into mischief. They are an active dog so can be challenging in an apartment, unless well exercised. These dogs are people dogs and love to be with the family; they don’t like being banned to the outdoors in a kennel (this may cause anxiety). A house with a well fenced yard works best for this breed, either town or rural will suit them fine. They prefer a medium temperature climate, extreme heat or cold can cause distress.
